Beauty has always been central to photography. It appears in faces, gestures, landscapes, light, bodies, ruins, streets, conflict, stillness, grief, intimacy, and memory.
But beauty is never simple.
What one person finds beautiful, another may find ordinary, painful, disturbing, exploitative, sacred, or invisible. Beauty may be shaped by culture, social conditioning, psychology, gender, class, history, trauma, technology, and power. It may emerge through tenderness, but also through difficulty. It may invite us to look, but it may also demand that we question why we are looking.
Beauty as perception and meaning
What makes an image beautiful, and is beauty universal or shaped by culture, memory, history, identity, and personal perception?
Beauty beyond comfort
Can photography reveal beauty within grief, violence, and discomfort and how does this shape our understanding of the world?
Beauty, responsibility, and the future of images
What ethical, legal, and cultural responsibilities arise when images are made, owned, circulated, or reshaped by algorithms and AI?

Day 1 explores the philosophical, psychological, visual, and aesthetic dimensions of beauty through photography.

Exploring the enduring relationship between photography and beauty, including whether photography creates beauty or merely captures it.
The visual language of beauty
Examining how composition, light, form, timing, and visual tension shape the emotional and aesthetic power of an image.

Understanding beauty beyond aesthetics through psychology, perception, memory, and the human response to images.
Beauty beyond comfort and across art forms
Engaging with grief, violence, and the sublime, while also honouring iconic visual storytellers through tribute, and interdisciplinary expression.
Beyond Beauty: Responsibility, Visibility, and the Future
The day will engage with ethics, consent, ownership, representation, gender, visibility, law, technology, and the future of photography itself.
Ethics, consent, and the photographer’s gaze
Examining dignity, consent, public visibility, and responsibility across street photography, documentary practice, and images of people or communities.
Ownership, rights, and representation
Exploring copyright, permissions, commissioned work, moral rights, gender, representation, and the politics of the female gaze.
Visibility, influence, and gatekeeping
Understanding how beauty standards, media, digital platforms, galleries, festivals, institutions, algorithms, and gatekeeping shape what becomes visible.
Photography, technology, and social transformation
Reflecting on AI-generated imagery, synthetic beauty, image saturation, and the role of photography in times of crisis, change, and collective transformation.
