Opening up the World of Photography to India’s Young Storytellers
The Young Lens Project is a long-term educational initiative by the ZiiP Foundation that introduces photography as a craft, a language, and a viable career to students from government schools and underserved communities across India.
Conceived as a structured, school-embedded program, the initiative responds to a persistent gap in access to creative education. It addresses this not through one-day workshops or weekend interventions, but through sustained, year-long engagement modelled on academic rigour building skill, confidence, and possibility over time.
ABOUT THE YOUNG LENS PROJECT
Access, Representation, and Possibility
Photography today is more than an art form. It is the language through which the world communicates, remembers, and understands itself — and a gateway to a wide range of creative professions. Yet for students in India’s government schools, structured access to this world remains largely out of reach.
The Young Lens Project was established to change this. The initiative equips young people from underserved communities with the technical foundations, storytelling craft, and mentorship needed to pursue photography seriously — while turning their lenses toward the neighbourhoods, livelihoods, and cultures they know best.
In doing so, the project serves a dual purpose: uplifting the lives and prospects of individual students, and strengthening India’s photography ecosystem from its roots — nurturing the diverse practitioners who will shape the country’s visual culture in the decades ahead.
WHO IT SERVES
Young Storytellers,
Underrepresented Worlds
The program works with teenage students in Government High and Higher Secondary Schools, drawn from urban underserved communities.
These are young people who inhabit rich, under-documented worlds — and who rarely see themselves behind the camera.
The Young Lens Project enables them to participate in visual culture not as subjects, but as creators.

WHAT THE PROGRAM DOES
Building Photographers,
Session by Session
Each program runs throughout the academic year, guiding small student cohorts from observation and photography to storytelling, portfolio development, and presentation. A facilitator-ready, scalable curriculum builds practical skills in cameras, light, exposure, composition, portraiture, street photography, and documentary practice.
Learning culminates in each student creating a photo story drawn from their own community — a person, place, livelihood, or culture they know intimately. The emphasis on lived experience ensures that students develop not just technique, but voice.
Student work is curated, printed, and presented through zines and community-level exhibitions. Students learn to organise their work, speak about it, and present it to an audience — while their communities witness their own stories told by their own children.
Working alongside practising photographers, students gain exposure to the professional world of image-making. Each participant completes the program with a personal portfolio, an exhibited photo story, and a clear understanding of the career paths photography opens.

Sustainable Development Goals — a reflection of what the program
fundamentally is, not an afterthought.
SDG 4
Quality Education.
The program advances Target 4.4, increasing the number of young people with relevant technical and vocational skills for employment and entrepreneurship, and Target 4.5, ensuring equal access to education and vocational training for children from vulnerable backgrounds. Sustained, school-embedded delivery makes quality creative education an entitlement, not a privilege.
SDG 8
Decent Work and Economic Growth.
By positioning photography as a viable profession and equipping students with portfolios and career pathway guidance, the program contributes to Target 8.6 — reducing the proportion of youth not in employment, education, or training — and builds a deliberate early on-ramp into India’s growing creative economy.
SDG 10
Reduced Inequalities.
The program advances Target 10.2, promoting the social, economic, and cultural inclusion of all, by ensuring young people from underserved communities are not merely represented in visual culture, but representing themselves within it.
LOOKING AHEAD
An Initiative Designed to Grow
The Young Lens Project is a long-term institutional commitment, designed from the outset to be repeatable and scalable.
Beginning in India’s metro cities, the program will build school partnerships and a proven delivery model before expanding into Tier 2 cities. Through collaborations with like-minded organisations, the ZiiP Foundation aims to extend it across Southeast Asia and, eventually, establish it as a globally adaptable framework.
The Foundation is also building lasting infrastructure through photographer-mentors, school partnerships, an alumni community, and a digital archive of student work.
Ultimately, the project seeks to build skill, voice, and opportunity across generations—empowering young people to become creators shaping the visual world.
