Indu Antony
Indu Antony is a multidisciplinary artist based in Bangalore and Kerala, India. Initially trained in medicine, she transitioned to a full-time art practice focused on feminism and gender in public spaces. Her long-running project Cecilia’ed explores gendered presence in urban environments. She created ManiFest, India’s first drag king photo series, which has been exhibited internationally and raised awareness about LGBTQI+ issues. Committed to community engagement, she co-founded two art spaces—Kanike and Namma Katte, a leisure centre for women. To encourage more women in self-publishing, she launched Mazhi Books, whose first publication received critical acclaim. Her work blends activism, art, and community to challenge social norms.
About Work
Cecilia’ed (2018–ongoing) is an artistic intervention by Indu Antony that challenges gendered norms in public spaces. Drawing from feminist geography, the project examines how societal behavior and collective norms label certain areas as ‘unsafe’ or inaccessible for women.
Using the politics of herd mentality and the appeal of celebrity culture, Antony subverts these narratives by engaging directly with local communities and spaces that typically restrict women’s presence.
Through performative and symbolic acts, Cecilia’ed reclaims public environments, fostering dialogue on safety, accessibility, and gender. The project not only questions existing power structures but also opens pathways for women to assert their presence in historically exclusionary spaces, encouraging a reimagining of shared, inclusive urban life.
